Lawn dethatching: What is it, is it worth my time, and when should it be done?

Dethatching your lawn involves the process of mechanically removing dead grass and plant material (thatch) from your lawn. Dethatching typically uses flexible metal spring-tines to pull dead grass (thatch) up to the surface so it can be removed. This process can be very labor intensive and result in a lot of debris removal. Dethatching your lawn is beneficial when you have a high amount or thick layer of “thatch” that can interfere with proper sun, air, water and nutrient requirements for healthy grass growth.

Seeing Tunnels in your lawn? You may have Voles

Voles can wreak havoc on your lawn over the winter months.

Voles are often confused with Moles. The biggest difference between these two are that Moles will actually burrow underground and typically feed on insects. Voles on the other hand, tunnel in the thatch layer and feed on roots. When Voles are active enough they can kill off sections of grass where they tunnel. Voles are NOT an indicator of grubs. Moles, however, WILL feed on grubs.

This recent snow melt is providing an excellent opportunity to assess your lawn for damage

Vole damage typically appears in late winter or early spring as the snow begins to melt because they tunnel in your lawns thatch layer under the protection of snow cover. In Ankeny, Voles will typically “hide-out” in landscape beds, rough-cut lawn areas, or loose or porous retaining walls (boulder walls).

How do I get rid of Voles?

Many times hand-raking or using a dethatcher/power-rake to remove their tunnels in the thatch layer is a great way to encourage them to go elsewhere and can help prevent future damage. The sooner this is done the better. If you have repeat problems with Voles they likely have a nice “home” nearby and it is best to eliminate them. This can be done by placing bait-stations in their active tunnels followed by a dethatching of the area.

If you think you have Voles in your Ankeny lawn and would like help getting rid of them, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

What is Lawn Aeration and why do I need it for my Ankeny lawn?

Best aeration service   Aeration Services in Ankeny IA

Lawn aeration is the process of mechanically removing soil “cores” from your lawn using an “aerator”. Aeration is the single best cultural practice you can do for your lawn each fall. Some of the benefits aeration provides are:

  • Relieves Soil Compaction
  • Increases air and water penetration to the roots
  • Improves Nutrient Uptake
  • Increases resilience to drought and heat stress

Aeration is also a great service to pair with over-seeding. Over-seeding during or after aeration allows the grass seed to fall into the aeration holes for better seed-to-soil contact which is required for seed germination.

You should aerate your Ankeny lawn each fall. Ankeny lawns are often compacted from the building process and our urban soils are high in clay which presents problems for growing a lush lawn. Aside from all of the benefits listed above you can pair aeration with overseeding to introduce new grass to help fill in bare spots.

LawnOxygen provides the best lawn aeration and overseeding services in Ankeny and surrounding areas. Reach out today for a free quote.

Irrigation Shutdown Near Me

When should I start up my lawn irrigation system?

Irrigation systems can be a godsend for maintaining a beautiful lawn in Iowa. They don’t come without their risks though. Our irrigation service areas of Urbandale, Ankeny, Johnston and Polk City are not historically out of frost/freeze danger until late April/early May. Does that mean you can’t water your lawn before then? Certainly not, but it does pose the risk of irrigation system freeze damage if your water is turned on too early. Your irrigation system backflow preventer and the piping coming out of your home are the most susceptible pieces to freezing. This can, however, be minimized by either draining the backflow device or wrapping it in a towel or blanket if there is a chance for a late freeze.
